This weekend has been marked by a number of remarkable sporting events in the life of our country. Winners and medallists of the Turkmenistan Basketball Championship U18 were determined on Saturday, February 7. The Specialized Chess and Checkers School, which was opened in Ashgabat about two months ago, hosted three tournaments in the intellectual sports on Sunday, on February 8.

The junior tournaments brought together eight teams (three teams from Ashgabat and five teams from the regions) which were split into two groups. The two top teams in each group continued to compete for medals in the semi-finals. Ashgabat-1 team and the team from Mary Velayat played for the title in the final. Ashgabat-1 team defeated 48:61 their opponents from Mary Velayat. Young basketball players from Mary Velayat ranked second in the national tournament and let their opponents from Ashgabat rose to the highest step of the podium. The team from Lebap Velayat, who had defeated their peers from the Olimp sports school from Ashgabat, in the third-place game, won ‘bronze.

The women’s basketball tournament brought together six teams from the regions of the country and Ashgabat; they participated in the round-robin competitions. Young basketball players coached by Zarima Sultanova from Lebap Velayat held the lossless games – five wins out of five possible. It should be noted that there was quite a big difference in the score in each game they played.

The competitions, held at the Specialized Chess and Checkers School, included the Ashgabat Chess Championship U12, the Ashgabat Chess Championship U18 and the Ashgabat chess tournament in the framework to the VI National Sports Games, held under the motto “Turkmenistan of the Land of the High Spirit and Good Health!”

The competitions brought together about 40 chess players under 12 years old from the sports chess school of the Ashgabat Committee for Sports. They participated in nine rounds of the tournament run under the Swiss system. The winner in the junior group was determined two rounds before the tournament finished: Allayar Shirliev won the gold medal. The young chess player coached by Honoured Coach of Turkmenistan Aidogdy Atabaev had an unbeaten record and scored nine points out of nine possible.

The fate of the first place in the women’s chess tournament was determined by counting the coefficients, as two participants in the tournament Merjen Batyrova and Ogulsurai Bairambaeva scored 8.5 points each in the competitions. Merjen won the struggle of the coefficients and received the gold medal. Ogulsurai has ‘silver’ on her assets.

The checkers tournament will last till February 14. Its winners and medallists will be determined in two tournaments – the competitions run in the classical system and the blitz tournament.

The women’s chess team will be leaving on February 9 for Rasht, Islamic Republic of Iran, where they will be participating in an international rating tournament from 11 to 20 February. The team consists of the best chess players of our country, including the 2013 Asian champion Gozel Atabaeva, the 2014 National Premier Chess League winner Bahar Hallaeva, the Asian vice champion Mengli Ovezova, among others.

A match of the AFC Asian Cup (AFC) will be held at the Ashgabat stadium on February 9. 2014 Turkmenistan Cup winners Ahal FC will play with AFC Cup winners (2006, 2007) Dordoi FC. Altyn Asyr FC – 2014 Turkmenistan champions will play with Al Sagr FC – Yemen champions on February 10.
