Turkmen chess players have recently gained new victories in the major international tournaments. Our compatriots won the silver and bronze medals in the International Khazar Cup, which took place in Rasht, the Islamic Republic of Iran. Maksat Atabaev, who performed in the Moscow Open tournament, which took place in the capital of the Russian Federation, met the criteria for the title of International Grandmaster. He is the youngest chess player in Turkmenistan to be awarded the highest title.
Over 500 chess players from Russia, the United States, France, Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania and other countries of the world gathered together in the Iranian maritime city. Participants in the tournament competed for the medals in four subgroups. The Turkmen chess players achieved success in C Group. FIDE Master Bahar Hallaeva rose to the second stage of the podium. The current champion of Turkmenistan scored 7 points in 9 rounds of the Swiss system competitions and yielded only to a representative of the host team.
Another chess player from Turkmenistan – FIDE Master Gozel Atabaeva, who won the bronze medal, scored 7 points and yielded to her teammate in a ratio coefficient. The fact that the young lover of intellectual games ranked among the top three chess players, who competed on equal footing with adult sportsmen from 12 countries, increases the significance of her victory. Another member of our team Mengli Ovezova with 6.5 points ranked fourth in the group tournament.
FIDE Master Hairulla Haitbaev achieved remarkable success in Group B of the men’s tournament. A participant in the 2013 World University Summer Games scored 7 out of 9 possible points and ranked among the chess players who took the 4th-12th places in the competitions. Only 0.5 points separated him from a medal.
Together with the classical chess competitions, Rasht hosted the blitz chess tournament. According to the rules, each party lasts for 3 minutes with the addition of 2 seconds after each move. A member of Turkmenistan team Merjen Yalkanova achieved remarkable success in the tournament: she ranked among the top five sportswomen.

In the framework of the international tournament representatives of the World Chess Federation tested the proficiency of coaches from over 30 countries in different categories. O. Annageldyev received the certificate of a FIDE organizer. The certificate confirms that the senior coach of Turkmenistan can be involved in the organisation of a wide variety of chess international tournaments, including the world and Asian championships.
A coach Aidogdy Atabaev passed two tests to certify his titles of a FIDE arbiter and a FIDE coach. Henceforth, the Turkmen coach can perform as an arbiter in the international chess competitions and as a coach in any country of the world.
Four championships of Turkmenistan – U10, U12, U16 and U18 – started at the new chess and checkers school in Ashgabat on February 22. About 150 young chess players from all the regions and Ashgabat are competing for the medals. Winners will be announced on March 1.
