Each day of the mass sports and cultural action held under the slogan “Health and Happiness” is marked by exciting activities and events. International Grandmaster Maksat Atabaev gave a 100- board simultaneous exhibition at the specialized chess and checkers school. His rivals were young chess players from the school who attempted opposing the renowned sportsman during the 8-hour intellectual marathon.

Maksat Atabaev won 96 games and drew 3 games. Eleven-year-old Muhammeod Ezizov was the only one chess player who defeated the International Grandmaster. Secretary General of the Asian Chess Federation Hisham Al Taher, who arrived in the capital of Turkmenistan to participate in the international conference dedicated to the 2017 Asian Games, attended the simultaneous exhibition and highly evaluated the sportsmanship of young chess players from the specialized chess and checkers school.

Chess is not just a popular sport in Turkmenistan; our sportsmen represent Turkmenistan in a worthy manner at the prestigious tournaments of the planet and win prizes and awards. Maksat Atabaev is one of these talented chess players. At the age of 19, he won the International Grandmaster title and gold medals in a number of international tournaments. For example, Maksat won the Rapid Tournament of the chess tournament series First Saturday, which took place in Hungary in March this year.

The exhibition performances of Turkmen figure skaters that took place on the ice arena of the Winter Sports Complex on April 4 were the most spectacular events of the last week. The spectacular show, in which wonderful music was combined with graceful movements, displayed the enhanced sportsmanship of young sportsmen from the sports school and the Olympic sports schools under the State Committee for Sport. Young figure skaters coached by Karina Movsesian, Jennet Nuryagdyeva and Aihanum Gulamalyeva presented 17 compositions.

A renowned sportswoman, Honoured Coach of the Russian Federation Elena Tchaikovskaia was visiting Ashgabat these days. She arrived in our country to select promising figures skaters from Turkmenistan, who would study at sports schools in Russia and participate in international tournaments. Elena Anatolyevna Tchaikovskaia coached the Olympic medal winners – the renowned dance duets Aleksander Gorshkov and Ludmila Pahomova, Gennady Karponosov and Natalia Linichuk, Evgeny Platov and Oksana Grishuk…

After the exhibition show she said in an interview:

“I saw the exceptional, original school of figure skating that harmoniously combines great choreography, sporting dance and storyline of performances. Turkmen skaters are able to ‘hear’ music, which is one of the key components of every performance. The only thing that your sportsmen should work on is the technical preparation of jumps.”

One of the aims of the visit of Elena Tchaikovskaia to Turkmenistan is to select promising Turkmen sportsmen who will participate in the XXIX International Children’s Ice Dancing Festival, which will be held at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on April 18. Our figure skaters from the Maral dance group won the Grand Prix in the nomination “Original Production” of the Festival last year and became medal winners in the nomination “For the Best Choreography” in 2013. So, according to the prominent Russian coach, Turkmen figure skaters have all chances to excel at these prestigious competitions this year.

The chess competitions between the teams of the velayats and Ashgabat, held at the specialized chess and checkers school on April 4, determined the champions. The team from Mary Velayat reached the top of the points table. The teams of Ashgabat and Lebap Velayat ranked second and third respectively in the tournament.

The Kurash Championship of Turkmenistan was held in Turkmenabat, the administrative centre of Lebap Velayat. The competitions brought together 150 athletes. Kurash wrestlers from Lebap Velayat ranked first in both the men’s and women’s team tournaments.

A third-year student of the National Institute of Sports and Tourism of Turkmenistan Merdan Ataev took the third place in the 50 backstroke swimming event which brought together over 100 swimmers from around the world in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates on April 4. The young swimmer is coached by Honoured Coach of Turkmenistan Sergei Yepifanov. He won bronze medals the international 50m and 100 me swimming events, which took place in Istanbul in August last year.

The sports event, during which schoolchildren from sports schools and students of higher educational institutions climbed along the Path of Health, became some kind of festival of physical culture.

The Mary Velayat Open Cycling Championship took place in Mary. The best cyclists from towns and etraps of the velayat – over 50 sportsmen – started from the giant gas field Galkynysh in the early morning. The 15-kilometre cycling track that stretched across sandy areas, amidst the dunes, was abundant in sharp ascents, descents and turns which made cyclists display their techniques and endurance.

Maksat Gurbanov from Murghab Etrap, Ata Atajanov from Mary Etrap and Akmurad Durdymuradov from Bairamali Etrap ranked first, second and third respectively in the competitions.

The Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasizes that the main goal of the state policy in the sports sector is a crucial aspect of the social strategy for bringing up healthy generations who are strong in spirit. This is vividly illustrated by the on-going Month “Health and Happiness” which is gathering pace, involving more enthusiasts.
