Women’s forum under the motto “Success in achieving gender equality in the epoch of might and happiness” was held in the conference hall of the Ýyldyz Hotel. The forum was dedicated to the election of our country into the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
The forum brought together deputies of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, high-ranking officials, representatives of government agencies, executive and local authorities, public organisations as well as scientists, specialists in the spheres of education, culture, mass media and international organisations, including UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, etc.
Emphasizing the multifaceted activities of women and their active role in the political, economic and cultural life of the country, those speaking during the forum noted that in all spheres of public and state life in Turkmenistan women were guaranteed with equal rights and possibilities for implementation of all of the rights and opportunities provided by the Constitution and the laws of the country as well as international conventionsб which Turkmenistan acceded to.
Highly evaluating the fact of the election of Turkmenistan into the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan Ms. Jacinto Barrins noted that this fact testified to another recognition of our country’s successes in this important sphere of the state and public life by the international community.
Membership in this UN agency opens up wide opportunities for the participation of our country in the preparation and development of appropriate policies, standards and regulations at the global level. The importance of the gender equality is underscored by its inclusion as one of the goals of sustainable global development for the period after 2015.
Achievement of the gender equality is an integral part of the state policy of Turkmenistan: the national legislation is consistently improved, programmes on involvement of women in the work of the state government bodies and increasing the level of their professional development are designed and implemented. This year, Turkmenistan has started implementing the National Action Plan on Gender Equality for 2015-2020, which will offer a new impetus to the work of government agencies and non-governmental organizations on involvement of women in the life of society and the state.
