A two-day seminar on “The international standards and national practices in facilitating access to information and developing effective mechanisms for accreditation of local and foreign journalists” took place in Ashgabat.

The seminar was organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan in the framework in of the project on “Improvement of the mass media law in Turkmenistan”. Seminar participants included representatives of the Mejlis, departments and research institutions specializing in the sphere of law and information technology in Turkmenistan, national newspapers, journals and e-periodicals and higher educational institutions.

International experts Anna Kachkaeva (Russian Federation) and Taras Shevchenko (Ukraine) presented the basic principles of cooperation of the media with the legislative, executive and judicial authorities, the specific aspects of legal regulation of access to information and the international standards in this sphere.

Those speaking during the seminar focused on the large-scale work taken place in Turkmenistan with the aim to develop an information space, create new print and electronic media and expand access to Internet. Much attention was paid to the promotion of information exchange with foreign media.

Underlining the effectiveness of the long-term mutually beneficial cooperation in increasing professional skills of Turkmen journalists, seminar participants called for further effective cooperation and exchange of experiences in this area.

Various aspects of journalistic work in covering important resonant events, including cultural and humanitarian events, international summits and sporting events, international regulations on accreditation of journalists and other topics were considered during the seminar.
