Turkmenistan-Hungary Intergovernmental Commission for economic cooperation held its first meeting in Ashgabat. The heads and specialists of ministries and departments from the two countries participated in the meeting. The high-level delegation of the friendly country was led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary Dr. Laszlo Szabo.
An exchange of views on the prospects for building up bilateral relations took place during the meeting. In particular, the sides identified specific steps to deepen trade and economic cooperation and discussed the possibility of increasing trade through the establishment of joint ventures and enterprises. Particular attention was paid to the proposals to widen the range of goods exported from Turkmenistan to Hungary.
The meeting agenda also focused on the diversification of energy exports and use of renewable energy, cooperation in the transport sector and the drafting of the relevant intergovernmental agreements and cooperation in the information technology sector.
The sides noted that ample opportunities for enhancing cooperation existed in agriculture. In this context, emphasis was placed on the need to promote an exchange of experience in the implementation of best agricultural practices. The members of the Commission also discussed the possibility of testing different fruit and grape varieties from Hungary in soil and climatic conditions of Turkmenistan. The priority areas for bilateral cooperation include water management. The meeting participants called for the promotion of cooperation in water management, wastewater treatment and municipal services.
The members of the Commission focused on the need to establish partnership in the health sector. In this regard, the proposal for the establishment of contacts and exchange of information on current developments in diagnostics and treatment of diseases and others was put forward.
Emphasis was placed on the importance of deepening cooperation between the two countries in the humanitarian sphere, particularly in culture, education, science, sports and tourism. In particular, the sides focused on the usefulness of joint events and the participation of representatives of the two countries in international conferences and other forums held in Turkmenistan and Hungary.
The meeting participants are expected to sign the Protocol which will lay the groundwork for expansion of international cooperation.
