Turkmenistan chairs the Interstate Commission of Central Asian states

The Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (ICSD) that coordinates and manages regional cooperation on environmental protection and sustainable development in Central Asia held a meeting in the conference hall of the Yyldyz Hotel in Ashgabat. The meeting agenda included the delegation of the presidency over the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development to Turkmenistan that actively supports development of interstate relations to address environmental issues in the region in partnership with leading international organisations for 2015-2016.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon emphasized the importance of this cooperation during the bilateral talks, held in Ashgabat on June 13. The sides specified the environmental aspect of cooperation as an integral factor for global sustainable development.

The delegations including heads and leading specialists of state agencies for environmental protection and natural resource management from the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan and the representatives of the international organisations: the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Regional Environmental Centre of Central Asia (CAREC), the German Society for Economic Cooperation (GIZ) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), among others participated in the meeting.

The two-day preparatory working meeting with participation of representatives and experts from all the delegations – the participants in the meeting of the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development, operating under the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS), was held in the capital of Turkmenistan within the framework of the preparations for the ICSD meeting, which was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan with the support of the Secretariat and the Scientific Information Centre of ICSD, located in Ashgabat.

The concept of Turkmenistan’s presidency over the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development presented at the meeting envisages further development and enhancement of cooperation between Central Asian states in a wide range of environmental issues based on the rich experience in addressing environmental problems in the region, intensification of close collaboration between countries in the region and leading international organisations, in particular the United Nations and its specialized agencies and institutions, on environmental protection and sustainable development.

The action plan of the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development on sustainable development within regional cooperation was adopted and the relevant decisions on water resources management and quality of water, use of innovative technologies in the sphere of renewable energy sources and ‘green economy’ were taken on the outcomes of the meeting.
