The capital of the People’s Republic of China hosted the scientific conference “Turkmenistan-China: the Great Silk Road – the Road of Friendship and Cooperation”. The forum was organized by the Embassy of Turkmenistan in the People’s Republic of China jointly with the Dungan Studies Centre at the China Central University for Nationalities and the Beijing Association for the Development Studies of Nationalities.

The representative forum organized within the framework of the events on occasion of the 20th anniversary of neutrality of Turkmenistan brought together specialists of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, representatives of public research institutes and business organisations, officials of the Embassy of Turkmenistan in China, the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Turkmen students, who study at higher educational institutions in China, members of the delegation of Turkmenistan and the media.

Those speaking at the conference, including former Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Turkmenistan Mr. Yin Songling and the former Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Uzbekistan Mr. Zhang Zhiming, noted that the favourable geographical and geopolitical location of Turkmenistan, its role as a neutral peace-loving state had made our country a mediator between East and West and a unique region in Central Asia leading in the stabilization and integration processes on the vast space. The past 20 years have proved the effectiveness of the Turkmen model of neutrality in the life of the country as well as in the international arena, where Turkmenistan performs its constructive and peacekeeping functions.

The presentations on the history of Turkmen-Chinese relations, the age-old traditions of a mutually respectful dialogue between our nations and key aspects of the interstate cooperation at the present stage were presented during the forum. The reports made by the professors at the Central University for Nationalities Mr. Hu Zhenhua and Ms. Minawer Habibullah on the history of Kunya Urgench cultural and humanitarian contacts aroused particular interest among conference participants.

It was underlined that the year of 2014 was marked by the successful state visit of the Turkmen leader to China that became another important stage in relationships between our countries. The top-level talks spotlighted the strategic vectors and identified a number of specific long-term objectives.

The participants in the forum were unanimous that the mutual willingness of Turkmenistan and China to enhance political, political, economic, cultural and humanitarian ties as well as the profound positive experience of joint work for more than 20 years contributed to building up interstate relations. That is vividly prove by dozens of ambitious joint projects of national and international significance, including the project of the 21st century -Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline that serves as the strategic transnational energy bridge.

The forum participants discussed the Turkmen-Chinese cooperation within the project on creation of the Silk Road Economic Belt Initiative “One Road. One Belt”, which covers all Asian countries located on the perimeter of the Pacific Ocean, and aims at promoting trade and financial support to the countries located on the belt as well as building up cooperation on energy security, expanding partnership in infrastructure development, investment activity and cultural and innovation exchange. In this regard, emphasis was placed on the importance of on-going fruitful work carrying out by our countries in order to revive the ancient Silk Road on a qualitatively new level in the format of multifaceted cooperation and develop modern transnational road, rail and pipeline routes.

A book exhibition presenting the books by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and numerous publications about Turkmenistan, ancient history and culture and modern achievements of our country, was arranged in the framework of the scientific conference “Turkmenistan-China: the Great Silk Road – the Road of Friendship and Cooperation”, which was held in the conference hall of the Dungan Studies Centre at the China Central University for Nationalities.
