A roundtable meeting “Women and teenagers in the focus of humanitarian activities” organised by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) took place in the conference hall of the Yyldyz Hotel in Ashgabat.
The meeting dedicated to the World Population Day brought together representatives of Mejlis of Turkmenistan, sectoral institutions, the Red Crescent Society, Central Council of Magtymguly Youth Organisation and the media.
The theme of the World Population Day 2015 is intended to highlight the special needs of women and teenagers, who are more vulnerable in emergencies during conflicts and humanitarian disasters.
During the meeting, Director of UNFPA Regional Office for Central Asia Nikolai Botev emphasized the close attention paid and concern taken by the Government of Turkmenistan to protect public health and offer reproductive health services in humanitarian emergencies.
The meeting participants focused on the successful cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United Nations Organisation, and first of all with the United Nations Population Fund, in close collaboration with which the programmes on gender equality, reproductive health and others are implemented in the country. Last year, Turkmenistan adopted the National Action Plan on Minimum Initial Reproductive Health Service Package drafted with the UNFPA support. Our government also provides support to the maternity and childhood protection system.
The presentation on the report “World Population Day 2015: Key Messages” prepared by the United Nations Population Fund took place in the framework of the meeting.
