Turkmengaz State Concern approved as the leader of the TAPI Consortium

The Steering Committee of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project unanimously approved the candidacy of the Turkmengaz State Concern as the leader of the TAPI Consortium.

The 22nd meeting of the TAPI Steering Committee, including ministers of the oil and gas industry of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, took place in Ashgabat. The meeting was attended by top managers of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) that was appointed the transaction advisor for the TAPI gas pipeline project.

As a result of the meeting, the Turkmengaz State Concern was unanimously selected as the leader of the TAPI Consortium. As the new leader of the TAPI Consortium, the Turkmengaz State Concern will manage cooperation on the construction, financing, control and maintenance of the TAPI gas pipeline.

The Turkmengaz State Concern has more than 50 years of experience in the development, production and transportation of gas as well as the construction of pipelines. It is envisaged that other companies will join the group of the leader of the TAPI Consortium at the following stages of the project implementation.

Construction and operation of the TAPI gas pipeline, which will stretch from the border of Turkmenistan for 1,600 kilometers, will contribute to strengthening the energy security in the region, its economic stability and will create new prospects for development of international cooperation and business cooperation in Asia.

The TAPI gas pipeline will annually export up to 33 billion cubic meters of Turkmen natural gas to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India for more than 30 years.

Turkmenistan holds the fourth biggest gas reserves in the world and the TAPI gas pipeline will allow the country to diversify its supply routes in the south-eastern direction - towards the south of Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India.

All important legal and commercial documents that establish the foundation for implementation of the TAPI gas pipeline project have been signed as of today due to the efforts of the countries, participants of the project.
