Champions of Turkmenistan in chess and basketball

The winners and medalists of the Women’s Basketball Championship and Chess Championship U20 were determined in Ashgabat. The competitions became another important step within the framework of the preparations for the 2017 Asian Games because these sports are included are included into the programme of the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, which our capital will host in 2017.


The basketball tournament took place in the Berkararlyk Sports Complex that was opened in the beginning of the year. Six teams representing the Turkmen capital and five regions of the country that were split into two groups competed for the medals. They participated in the round-robin competitions. Two best teams of each group competed for the main prize – gold medals and the Cup.

Ashgabat team of the Ministry of Construction and Architecture that confidently defeated its opponents in each match won the first place. Basketball players representing the Ministry of Industry ranked second in the national tournament. The team from Lebap Velayat won ‘bronze’.

The Chess Championship U20 was held at the Specialized Chess and Checkers School. 16 chess players representing all regions of the country participated in the chess tournament. The young chess player from Ashgabat coached by Honoured Coach of Turkmenistan Serdar Annaberdiev won all the main prizes.


Rustem Nazarov, who scored 13 points out of 15 possible won the gold medal. Azat Nurmammedov (10.5 points) and Soltan Muradov (10 points) won the silver and bronze medals respectively.

First-rated chess player Maya Yalkanova from Mary Velayat coached by Honoured Coach of Turkmenistan Ejegyz Yalkanova, who defeated her opponents in each game and scored nine points, won the first place. Gulyalek Abdullaeva (seven points) from Mary Velayat won ‘bronze’.
