Turkmenistan defeated 1-0 Guam in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in Ashgabat.
According to the draw, Turkmenistan, Oman, Guam and India were qualified in Group D, where before the match versus Guam, our national team ranked the fourth with four points.
The forty teams competing in the second round were drawn into eight groups. The five group winners plus the four best second-placed teams will qualify for the third round.
The Ashgabat match started with reciprocal keen attacks. But the team of Turkmenistan was able to pick up ‘the keys’ to the net. In the 16th minute, when our footballers started the rushing counterattack from the mid-field and crashed into the rival’s scoring area, halfback Guvanch Abylov opened the score.
The team of Guam seized the initiative wishing to come back as soon as possible. The most dangerous moment for our sportsmen was during the last seconds of the first half of the game. The ball passed very close to the goal post of the Turkmen team.
After defeating the Guam team, Turkmenistan has gained seven points and ranks the third in the group. Oman ranks the first in the group with 11 points, the team of the Islamic Republic of Iran with eight points ranks the second. Turkmenistan has all the chances to lead the group.
