The Turkmenistan national team won a bronze medal in the Powerlifting European Open Championship among disabled persons, which took place in Eger, Hungary. Roza Matyakubova showed the most remarkable result in our team.
About 230 athletes from 44 countries participated in the international competitions. The Powerlifting European Open Championship was the last major international tournament before the Paralympic Games, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next year. For each team the competitions in Hungary, in which our team showed a good result, became a serious test not only on sportsmanship, but also on spiritual tenacity, endurance and will to win.
Roza Matyakubova won a bronze medal in the under 41 kg weight category. To do this she made only one attempt: a lift of 70 kilogrammes on her first attempt brought her a high award. R. Matyakubova left behind the very strong powerlifters from Russia, Poland, Ukraine and other countries.
Mayagozel Ekeyeva from our team showed a good result. She ranked fourth in the under 73 kg weight category with a lift of 100 kilogrammes.
A silver medallist of the 2014 Asian Para Games, held in the Republic of Korea, Sergei Meladze ranked among the top five athletes in the Powerlifting European Open Championship. He performed in the under 72 kg weight category and lifted 185 kilogrammes.
Another participant in the 2014 Asian Para Games, representing the Ashgabat school for disabled sportsmen Mekan Agalikov took the seventh place in the under 59 kg category. He lifted 158 kilogrammes.
A powerlifter from Balkan Velayat Bairam Saparov ranked among the top ten sportsmen in the European Open Championships. He ranked ninth in the under 97 kg weight category with a lift of 175 kilogrammes.
The men’s and women’s national powerlifting teams are to prepare for the Paralympic Games which will take place in a less than a year.
