Turkmen sportsmen win international judo and sambo tournaments

The best athlete of 2015 in Turkmenistan Gulbadam Babamuratova won the bronze medal in the under 52 kg weight category in Judo Grand Prix, held in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The participants in the prestigious competitions that brought together about 550 athletes from 86 countries competed not only for medals, but also for the rating points that would allow them the qualify to the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The achievements gained in the world and Asian championships and Grand Prix tournaments last year enabled G. Babamuratova to rank among the ten strongest judokas in the world rankings with 1,171 points and rank 11th in the Olympic ranking with 954 points.


The Turkmen athlete held four bouts on the tatami and gained victory in three of them. She defeated convincingly two athletes from the Republic of Korea Da Sol Park and Mi-Ri Kim and an athlete from the Canadian team Ecaterina Guica.

Good news came from Minsk, where the international tournament of category A for the prizes of the President of Belarus is taking place. The Turkmen athletes won 7 medals, including one gold, two silver and four bronze medals, in the competitions that brought together over 300 participants from nearly 20 countries.

Abdulla Babaev had no rivals in the under 68 kg weight category in the men’s combat sambo tournament. He defeated his teammate Ilyas Momunov from Ashgabat in the finals. Ilyas became the silver medallist in the weight category, where 14 athletes competed for medals.

Another silver medal was gained in the under 62 kg weight category where Ahmed Tanryberdiev showed outstanding results. Our compatriot lost in the finals to an athlete from the Belarusian team. Mergen Velihanov rose to the third step of the podium in the under 74 kg weight category.

The Turkmen athletes won three bronze medals in the women’s tournament. The winners are Arzuv Yalkapova (under 48 kg), Hurma Abdyeva (under 52 kg) and Zebo Orunova (under 64 kg).

The preparations for the first test competitions are currently taking place at the Ashgabat Olympic Village that will host the continental multisport event. The test tournaments include the Asian Sport and Combat Sambo Championship, which will bring together the teams of the Asian region as well as from Oceania countries.

Our practitioners in self-defence without weapons are to prepare for new important competitions at the international level. These include the Sambo World Cup Memorial of Kharlampiev, which will be held in Moscow in late March, and the world championships, which will take place in Bulgaria and Croatia this autumn.
