Turkmen chess players won the silver and bronze medals of the Khazar Cup Chess Festival in Ziba Kenar, the Islamic Republic of Iran in the women’s tournament.
World ex-Champion Anatoly Karpov attended the festoval opening ceremony. The world-known Grand Master played with top chess players simultaneously. The festival brought together over 700 chess players from 15 countries – Russia, the US, the Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Georgia among others.
Student of the National Institute for Toursim and Sports Ogulgerek Atabayeva gained 7.5 points of 9 possible and won the silver medal. The student of Honoured Coach of Turkmenistan Aydogdy Atabayev got decisive victories in seven games, agreed to a draw and lost 0.5 points to Zahetdifar Ananita (Iran).
Two chess players – our compatriot Jamal Ovezdurdyyeva and Arab Kiana from the United States of America, who gained seven points each, were qualified for rthe third place. The Turkmen chess player got higher sports coefficient and won the bronze medal.
Another our compatriot - Hurma Veliyeva gained six points and ranked among the 10 top chess players of the tournament. Maya Yalkapova, 2015 Turkmenistan Champion in U20 age group gained five points and performed the standarrds of the Candidate Master of Sports.
The 42d World Chess Olympiad in September, 2016 will brought together more than 2,000 athletes from 175 countries. Winners of Turkmenistan Championships of Men’s and Women’s Premier Leagues, which will be held in spring, will represent our country at the World Chess Olympiad.
