The representative meeting was organized by the United Nations Development Program in Turkmenistan and Turkmen National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights at the President of Turkmenistan with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country.
Opening the meeting, UNDP Resident Representative in our country Jacinta Barrens expressed deep gratitude to the Turkmen side for a large work on making the action plan, which takes into account the basic provisions of the international conventions ratified by Turkmenistan on Human Rights and is closely linked with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A vivid confirmation of the policy pursued by the head of state Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on further democratization of Turkmen society and the improvement of national legislation in the field of human rights was the foundation of a number of important structures. Thus, on the initiative of the nation leader, the Interdepartmental Commission on maintenance of fulfillment of international commitments of Turkmenistan in the field of human rights was established in August 2007. In 2011, it was transformed into the Interdepartmental Commission on maintenance of fulfillment of international commitments of Turkmenistan in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law. It is this permanent advisory body, which was charged with coordinating of the successful implementation of the measures outlined in the National Action Plan, and fulfillment of international obligations in the field of human rights.
The above-mentioned plan, providing to hold a range of activities, adopted for further improvement of the activity of state bodies and social organizations of Turkmenistan to ensure of the fundamental human rights and freedoms, as well as the implementation of international humanitarian law in the country’s legislation and practice.
