The 4th Central Asian Championships in sambo that has started in the Turkmen capital today has gathered representatives of five countries - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

The Asian Sambo Federation that brings together national associations from 26 countries presents Turkmenistan the right to host representative regional competitions for the second year in a row. Naturally this trust is granted to the country, in which the National Olympic Committee is headed by the Head of State - President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov, who purposefully implements the strategy of development of physical culture and sports in Turkmenistan.

Due to constructions of major sports facilities in Turkmenistan, started by the initiative of President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov, a modern sports infrastructure has been formed, which allows not only to hold competitions at the highest professional level, but also for Turkmen athletes to achieve good results on the international arena. At the last Asian Championship held in Tashkent, the students of Turkmen Sambo school won over twenty medals; and at the World Cup-2011 in Vilnius, Turkmen women's team entered the top three winners, leaving behind the countries that are known to be prestigious in the world of Sambo.

Championship of Central Asia in sambo has gathered not only well-known coaches, professionals and athletes in the region, but also well known judges - only one Uzbek delegation consisted of seven referees of international category, who possess vast experience of refereeing in the biggest tournaments.

On the first day of the tournament sets of medals in sport sambo were played for men and women.

Turkmen women's team won three gold and six silver medals. At the highest step of the podium went Margarita Filippova (weight category up to 48 kg), Zuhra Madraimova (60 kg) and Gulnar Hayytbaeva (64 kg). Silver medals were awarded to: Gulbadam Babamuratova (up to 52 kg), Rushana Nurjovova (56 kg), Nasiba Khallyeva (up to 68 kg) and Maral Sultanova (72 kg), Saodat Ishmuratova (80 kg) and Shirin Kubayeva (over 80 kg .)

Turkmenistan’s men’s team holds two golden and seven silver medals. Awards of highest standard were won by Allanurov Kerim (up to 57 kg) and Muhamed Temirov (74 kg). Silver medalists were: Geldymurad Kurbanov (up to 52 kg), Muhamed Annaberdyev (62 kg), Tejen Tedzhenov (68 kg), Samvel Ayrapetyan (up to 82 kg), Mergen Tedzhenov (90 kg), Amandurdy Khamzayev (up to 100 kg) and Nepes Bayramov (over 100 kg).

The Championship of Central Asia will continue tomorrow – representatives of combat sambo will compete for medals.
