Being a full member of the United Nations, Turkmenistan realizes full-scale cooperation with this representative international organization and takes concrete steps on implementation of key objectives of the Global Agenda. In this context, it is noteworthy that Turkmenistan is one of the first countries in the world, which started and successfully holds consultations on adaptation of Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainable Development Goals were adopted at the UN Summit on Sustainable Development in September 2015. In his speech at this high-level meeting, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that Turkmenistan fully supports this document and made a number of initiatives aimed at the unification of international efforts with a view of realization of Agenda in the field of development after 2015.

Almost immediately after the UN summit, Turkmenistan gave a start to work on the adaptation of the Sustainable Development Goals. During the consultations that took place with the participation of representatives of ministries and departments of the country and specialized UN agencies, it was agreed and approved technical task for a joint technical working group on coordination of goals and objectives, which will be adapted by Turkmenistan in accordance with the country's development priorities. The document provides a phased work aimed at developing strategies and sectoral target plans of socio-economic development of Turkmenistan in the context of achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

At the first stage of work, which began in October 2015 and will be completed in March of this year, it was held national consultations for coordinated adoption of the universal 17 goals of SDG, 169 tasks and over 200 indicators acceptable for Turkmenistan. According to participants, the work is carried out in a constructive and businesslike atmosphere.

It is also confirmed by representatives of the UN agencies. In particular, as the program specialist multi-country office of UN-Women Irina Dedova highlighted “while discussion of tasks and indicators of Goals №5 “Gender equality and expansion of rights and opportunities of women and girls”, nine tasks were proposed for further consideration, two of them with minor amended in connection with the fact that Turkmenistan has already achieved in this area significant progress.

Objective 5.5. “To ensure full and meaningful participation of women and equal opportunities for their leadership in all levels of decision-making in the political, economic and social life” was adopted in the original formulation and is indicative. For example, the percentage of women's representation at the Mejlis (National Parliament) is high and comparable with analogous indices of European countries. Now it is important to achieve the same high indices of women’s representation in local government.”

In accordance with the technical objective, in next two stages, the work will focus on integration of tasks and indicators of Sustainable Development Goals into the country’s Development Program within 2017-2021, into target sectoral plans and strategies, as well as to determine statistic methods for measurement of progress in their implementation. According to the document, the work will be completed by the end of this year.
