The science and research conference “Turkmenistan and international organisations: partnership in the name of the universal peace and development” was held in the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. Deputies of the Mejlis, specialists of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, heads and specialists of the UN agencies and diplomatic missions accredited in our country, university professors, students, businessmen, representatives of public organizations and mass media attended the meeting.
The forum is dedicated to the election of Turkmenistan to three authoritative international organizations: the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development for the period of 2017-2020, the Commission on Population and Development for the period of 2016-2020, and the Commission for Social Development for the period of 2017-2021. The exchange of experience on the important issues of international cooperation took place during the meeting. The conference participants underlined the significant Turkmenistan’s achievements of focusing on the increasing role of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, whose large-scale reformatory work promotes strengthening the geopolitical role of the country in the world coordinate system. The opportunities opening up before Turkmenistan as a country – member of authoritative UN structures with the aim to establish close cooperation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals were also discussed during the meeting.
Speaking during the conference, UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan Ms. Jacinta Barrins emphasized that the election of Turkmenistan to the UN structures for the second time proved that the world community had widely recognized the contribution of our country in ptromoting the UN goals and programmes on the national and global levels. The active positions of Turkmenistan and important initiatives put forward by the leader of Turkmenistan, which are reflected in the Resolutions of the UN General Assembly, testify to the aspiration of Turkmenistan to strengthen its positions on the world arena. In this regard, the election of Turkmenistan to three authoritative international organizations opens up new opportunities for Turkmenistan to consolidate its international authority.
The UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan gave her vision of how Turkmenistan could contribute to the work of the commission to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Turkmenistan has indisputable achievements in social and economic spheres, including creation of new jobs as well as conditions for comprehensive development of youth, achievement of gender equality. Huge opportunities are opening up for development of science and technology, introduction of innovative technologies, revealing research capacity among youth, promotion of their intellectual growth. Turkmenistan’s achievements and accumulated experience will be a good asset for ECOSOC structures, especially in the Commission for Social Development, which develops recommendations based on the new concept of social development set out in the Copenhagen Declaration. In conclusion, Ms. Barrens expressed belief that Turkmenistan would continue pursuing the course for a strong social integration.

It determines the functional tasks set before the committees in certain areas and focuses Turkmenistan on their achievement at the national and global levels in the interests of sustainable development of countries and prosperity of peoples.
The goals and tasks of the Commission are aimed at development in various fields. In particular, in the field of science and technology innovation as well as social protection. In this regard, the emphasis is placed on improvement of the methods of collecting and analyzing statistic data as the main indicator of development. The UNICEF Deputy Representative in Turkmenistan noted that in light of Turkmenistan's commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals, the country in cooperation with the UN initiated active processes aimed at introducing the tasks and indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals into national development programmes.
Speaking during the meeting, the UNICEF Deputy Representative in Turkmenistan touched upon the aspects of implementation of the national policy on early childhood development and other programme documents in the field of health care and education, which are aimed at guaranteeing each child with the right for harmonious development and quality education. Ms. Sialchonak expressed belief that Turkmenistan would make a worthy contribution to the work of the UN Commission.
Mr. Petko Draganov, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia underlined that the growing cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN was reflected in the main directions of the foreign policy of the state. This cooperation is actively developing in various fields at the national, regional and global levels. He noted that using various international formats, participating in the meetings of the UN General Assembly, UN committees and commissions and other international institutions, Turkmenistan had accumulated rich experience and had gained significant potential to address the priorities of the global agenda within the framework of joint projects with the UN agencies.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Italian Republic in Turkmenistan Mr. Marco Mancini emphasized that the conference in Ashgabat demonstrated involvement of Turkmenistan into the UN system and its constructive role in solving regional and global problems, the country's achievements in various fields. The diplomat noted that Turkmenistan not only successfully developed but also made a significant contribution to strengthening peace and the achievement of UN goals through active participation in the work of its committees and commissions.
Since the first years of independence, the status of neutrality has determined the foreign-policy course of Turkmenistan. It has become a fundamental concept of the national development and involvement of the world community on the principles of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs. Turkmenistan pursues an active policy to ensure the energy security, create transit-transport corridors and resolve the situation in the region.
