Ashgabat- The meeting on the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) is completed

At the meeting, organized by the WHO Regional Office with support of the Government of Turkmenistan it took parts the staff of the WHO Headquarters and the WHO European Regional Office, UN agencies, international experts and representatives of state and public organizations of 36 European countries, as well as the Turkmen specialists.

The participant of the Regional meeting exchanged information on the latest achievements on tobacco control in the WHO European Region’s countries, and discussed ways to achieving global targets - reducing tobacco consumption and gaining its free status regionwide. In this connection, Turkmenistan was highly appreciated for its effective work in this field, whose leading position in the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control recognized by all participants of the meeting. It was noted the established an effective legal framework, rigid control over the tobacco and assistance in giving up smoking. It was covered issues on pricing, and wide range public awareness and health promotion and health education for general public. There is an evidence of consistent and principle position of Turkmenistan in tobacco control. The annual tobacco control campaigns starts in the first month of May, dedicated to the celebration on World No Tobacco Day on 31 of May.

At the meeting, the representatives of Turkmenistan emphasized the importance of international cooperation and, above all, with the World Health Organization and the countries of the European Region. Turkmenistan follows the latest trends and achievements in tobacco control in other countries.

In the course of European Regional meeting it was discussed issues on preparation for the upcoming international meetings on the subject matter– the Conference of the Parties (CoP), the governing body of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) will be held in India in November this year.
