Turkmenistan holds Trade Policy Forum on development of international trade

Currently, a three-day Trade Policy Forum: Central Asia and the Multilateral Trading System held in the conference room "Yyldyz" hotel in Ashgabat. It was organized by the Ministry of Economy and Development of Turkmenistan jointly with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the World Trade organization (WTO).

The multilateral meeting is consists of foreign participants among of which are representatives of United Nations Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Iran, as well as representatives of the GIZ programme “Support for Regional Economic Cooperation in Central Asia” (Germany), UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development), UNDP (UNDP) and the World Bank.

The key themes of discussion were the advantages of the WTO membership, including simplification of trade procedures in Central Asia and the regional integration. Also at the forum, the participants were familiarized with the purposes and principles of the WTO, established in 1995 for the liberalization of international trade and regulation of Member States relations. WTO is responsible for the development and implementation of new trade agreements, and monitors compliance with Treaty Organization, signed by many countries ratified by countries’ parliaments.

The development of mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation with all interested countries is an important aspect of policy of the Turkmen leader aimed at strengthening the economic potential of Turkmenistan, and upgrading living standards and well being of the population.

In this regard, the head of the state asked to set tasks for the experts of the specially created commission to study the issues related to joining Turkmenistan into the WTO, in order to freely and efficiently integrate into the world economic system, increasing competitiveness of domestic products, establishing legislative basis of the market relations in accordance with international standards.

The task of the commission includes studying the agreements and rules of the World Trade Organization, impact analysis of entering WTO in various spheres of national economy and preparation of the relevant proposals.

The fact that Trade Policy Forum: Central Asia and the Multilateral Trading System was held here is a vivid example of the growing interest of business circles of the region and the world to the positive experience of dynamically developing Turkmenistan.

As expected, in accordance with the forum outcomes aimed at assisting the Central Asian integration into the multilateral trading system it will be signed the Ashgabat Statement.
