The IV ECA Ozone Protection Award ceremony for Customs and Enforcement Officers will be held in Ashgabat. The participants of these events will include experts for protection of ozone layer from different countries, customs employees of Europe and Central Asia, specialists of different agencies as well as representatives of international organizations accredited in Turkmenistan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, State Committee for Environment Protection and Land Resources together with UN Programme for Environment Protection (UNEP) are the organizers of the event.
The upcoming meeting aimed at closer cooperation in monitoring of the trade of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) on the vast territory of European Union and Central Asia would promote realization of the Montreal Protocol on the Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, and its amendments.
This award is an evidence to recognize of large inputs of customs and enforcement officers in restriction of illegal trafficking of substances, equipment and goods, which contain ODS. Such events contribute to wide awareness of the work conducted in the sphere of protection of ozone layer as well as cooperation between ozone centres and custom services of European and Central Asia countries.
The Regional Ozone Network for Europe and Central Asia unites 19 countries and includes 3 sub-regions (Caucasus, the Balkans and Central Asia). It was founded in 2003 under UNEP. In 2010 within the framework of Regional Ozone Network for ECA activities, the first ECA Ozone Protection Award for protection of ozone layer for customs and law enforcement officers was held in Ashgabat. Following awards were held in 2012 in Istanbul (Turkey) and in 2014 in Sarajevo (the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina). And now Ashgabat will be again is the place for the next award ceremony of ECA network.
More than 20 years ago, Turkmenistan joined the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, the UN Treaty Series, and later was supported all amendments in the accompanying Montreal Protocol. The commitments for these documents imply gradual removal of the outdated ODS and replacement it with alternative substances, and further reduction of production and utilization of ODS products. Turkmenistan does not produce any ODS goods. State Committee of Turkmenistan for Environment Protection and Land Resources is a core governmental organization responsible for implementation of this work. The close cooperation with specialized agencies of the UN is the strategic priority of Turkmenistan in this activity.
