Ashgabat hosts the meetings on gender equality

The meeting of the ad hoc working group to ensure the implementation of international obligations in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law, organized with the assistance of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) held in the conference hall of the Ministry of Foreign.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss and develop of measures for implementation of the “National Action Plan on Gender Equality in Turkmenistan for 2015-2020 years”, approved by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at the beginning of last year. The meeting attended deputies of the national parliament, representatives of ministries and departments, public organizations, universities and mass media.

During the meeting, UN Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative of UNDP in Turkmenistan Ms. Jacinta Barrins noted the fruitful cooperation of our country with leading international organizations and, in particular, a close cooperation with UNFPA aimed at implementing various programs and projects, including gender equality, reproductive health, youth policy, and others.

As stressed, protection of the legitimate rights and interests of women, strengthening their roles in the socio-political, economic and cultural life, provision of public benefits, ensuring the conditions for a decent life and creative labor is an important factor for sustainable development of the Turkmen society in the context of successful socially oriented leadership policy of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

At the meeting, the special attention was paid to issues on raising public awareness on gender issues, the further improvement of the legislation of Turkmenistan in this area, strengthen the family institutions and promotion of marriage and family values. Large-scale health reforms carried out significantly in Turkmenistan which aims to upgrade it at the level of world’s standards, including issues on maternal and child health care.
