High level Consultations for prevention of recurrence of malaria European region are completed in Ashgabat. The forum, united high-rank representatives of nine countries and leading experts of the Headquarter and European Bureau of the WHO, was organized under support of the Government of Turkmenistan. Preparation of final version of Ashgabat Declaration for Prevention of Recurrence of Malaria was one of the main targets of the consultations.

At the end of the session, the participants gave interview:

Leonard I. Ortega, the Head of Technical Group for Support and Creation of potential of Global Programme for Malaria, the Headquarter of the WHO:

First of all, I would like to express the gratitude to Turkmen side for opportunity to gather in Ashgabat and discuss the existing situation in European region related to malaria. Our main purpose to analyse the successes achieved by the countries of the region in the course of Tashkent Declaration for Elimination of Malaria adopted 11 years ago and develop the strategy of joint work in the future

I am glad to state that there was not a single case of local malaria registered in the countries of European region for last 15 years. We are to do a big work to make this tendency to be stable. Recently, migration processes are increased, people started travelling a lot and in this relation the risk of recurrence of malaria has appeared. That is why, our goal is to mobilize all efforts and conduct coordinated work for non-admission of recurrence of malaria.

High representative status of the current forum on the level of deputy ministries of public health and leading experts indicates the responsible approach of the countries of the region to this issue. We succeeded to define key aspects of joint work for non-admission of recurrence of malaria.

I would like to express the gratitude to the Government of Turkmenistan for constructive position in this matter and active cooperation with the WHO.

Elhan Gazimov, Department of Infectious Diseases and Public health Safety of European Bureau of the WHO:

High level meeting for prevention of recurrence of malaria completed in Ashgabat is important milestone in elimination of disease. We achieved the elimination of disease by joint efforts of the counties of the region in accordance with our obligations. Now, we concentrate on support of this status.

This was the first session that focused on preventative measures for non-admision of recurrence of malaria.

At the end of consultations, we agreed on final text of Ashgabat declaration, which provisions were discussed during the meeting. On behalf of the Director of European Regional Bureau of the WHO, the document will be sent to all ministers of public health of the region for signature.

There is always risk of recurrence until malaria is not eliminated on the global level. Thus, coordinated work including trans boundary cooperation and entomological monitoring is necessary. The outcomes of the session displayed that the countries of the region are common in approaches to joint work.

Choose of Turkmenistan as place for consultations is not odd. You country proved that elimination of malaria is feasible if there are strong political will, competent composite approach and adequate financing. Turkmen model of elimination of malaria can be successfully implemented by other countries.

We are glad to presented opportunity to take part in opening of new super modern medical centres, which indicate innovative component of national project in public health sphere and social oriented strategy of development of Turkmen State.
