International Book fair reflects achievements of publishing industry

XI International Book Fair was opened in the Turkmen capital. The current forum, organized by the Turkmen State Publishing Service and the Trade and Industrial Chamber, is dedicated to the coming 25th anniversary of the Independence of the state.

The opening of the Fair was forestalled by laying of flowers to the Monument of the Independence. Turkmen stage masters and art bands greeted participants and gusts of international book show at the square in front of the Expocentre.

Member of the Government, leaders of National Parliament, ministries and departments, heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Turkmenistan, science and cultural workers, representatives of mass media and students took part in the event.

“Preserving the past, moving to the future” is a burden of the current book exhibition, which is distinguished by originality of presentation of exhibits. Thus, the idea to reflect the evolution of publishing craft and to highlight the succession of the best traditions of poetry was presented by large models of books with works of previous centuries and modern issues on national historical and cultural heritage.


Original scrolls portray outstanding Turkmen poets like Magtumguly, Mollanepes, Myatajy, Azadi with poetic messages to the descendants. The images of singer of love and beauty Mollanepes and his beloved Bossantach return to live in performances of the students of the Turkmen State Culture Institute.

Dialog of the past and the present is continued in exhibits placed and demonstration displays near large book models. Archive periodical materials, copies of handwritten works of Turkmen thinkers and poets as well as “Gyorogly” epic and “The Book of My Grandfather Gorkut” perfectly issued in our days, works of outstanding domestic scientists, thinkers and classics of Turkmen literature are displayed there.


The current book forum is aimed at demonstration of achievements of national and world industry of publishing and printing art, popularization of their best samples and summoned to promote utmost development of international cultural cooperation. In this context, it worth mentioning that exhibitors from 19 countries including USA, Russia, China, Great Britain, Austria, Poland, Albania, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan participate in the work of XI International Book Fair. Heads and representatives of cultural sphere of number of countries, large foreign companies and publishing houses, printing establishments, non-governmental organizations, and famous authors, masters of translation, scientists, illustrators, journalists and managers are in composition of the delegations. There are displays stands of large foreign universities like Moscow Polytechnic University, Cambridge University and Berkeley University of California as well as information and resource centre of the USA Embassy in Turkmenistan and Cultural Centre of the Embassy of the IRI in our country at the exhibit ground of the book fair.

Branch departments, profile enterprises, libraries, archives, various representatives of private sector and legal entities take part in the exhibition from the Turkmen side.


The stand of International magazine “Turkmenistan”, reflecting all the milestones of our country and opening the richest historical and cultural heritage of the Turkmen people to its readers, aroused great interests of visitors of the exhibition.

One of the permanent exhibitors of the Fair, the Publishing House “Komsomolskaya Pravda” expanded its expositions. Besides the periodicals, it demonstrates colourful albums and books dedicated to art, tourism and historical and cultural heritage in the current show.

The stands of publishers from Russia occupies sizable area of the exposition. Publishing companies “Medkniga”, “Medizdat”, “Russian Chess House”, “House of Russian Émigré Community”, “Informnauka” and “Russian Language” LLCs, publishing houses “Aski”, “Russian Rarity”, “Kuchkovo Field”, “Basko”, “At Nikitian Gates”, “Caleidoscope”, “Galart”, “Sadra”, “Serafim and Sofya”, “O-short” and many others presented their production in the Turkmen capital.

Large Austrian Company «Heydelberger», one of the permanent participants of the book exhibition in Ashgabat, gave proposals for delivery of equipment for printing industry.


The Book fair is large-scale demonstration of the art of book but it is not the only exhibit at the event. Achievements in publishing, printing and library business, new technologies and media products are widely reflected there. Exhibition ground of XI International Book fair presents stands of manufacturers of different printing equipment and auxiliaries. Printing industry in modern world is a dynamically developing sphere, important component of information and communication branch. Progress of science and technology allows improving printing technologies in accordance with market demands, what is demonstrated today by both domestic branch enterprises and foreign companies.


The Museum of the State Cultural Centre and Museum of Visual Arts, presented the works of the leading figures of Turkmen painting school dedicated to history and arts, as well as domestic and foreign illustrators were invited to participate in the forum.

Considerable potential of domestic printing industry is demonstrated not only by the largest governmental enterprises but also by private companies, which presented wide collection of different publishing, printing, advertising and souvenir productions including colourful albums and calendars, booklets and postcards sets and other to the attention of visitors. For businessmen, the Fair is excellent ground for establishment of professional relations between the publishers and book traders. Its participants are presented with opportunity to establish business relations with largest publishing houses and book trade networks as well as to enter international markets via direct contacts.


At the same time, the forum promotes activation of interest to the book and publishing business, receiving information on innovations of the branch, gaining of useful experience. These subjects were in the centre of attention of the participants of the scientific conference “Book, the way to cooperation and progress” held in the second half of the day and gathered representatives of publishing circles, high educational institutions, libraries, specialists in printing production, authors and journalists in conference hall of the Trade and Industrial Chamber. During the forum, the participants was introduced with achievements of publishing branch of Turkmenistan and other countries, implementation of new technologies into production of book and other printing items, establishment of electronic networks, transfer of data and distribution of books in electronic format.

Interested exchange of opinions on establishment of close partner relations between profile structures including in training of specialists of publishing business and printing technologies, translation work, libraries cooperation and art contacts were held. Meetings, master classes discussions of publishers about condition of modern book market and new trends in book production and other will take place in the next two days under the book forum.


The 8th volume of encyclopaedic work of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov “Medicinal plants of Turkmenistan” will be presented to our guests – the heads of publishing houses, book trade networks, authors, representatives of library and educational societies, art workers on the next day.

Traditionally, the state Academy of Arts will host art meeting of illustrators from different countries of the world.

Children authors and poets from different countries will review topical directions of development of art for the kids during the meeting “Travel to the fairy tales’ country”.


The art of translation is a subject of another art event during the forum. Authors, cultural workers, members of editorial boards of Turkmen and foreign mass media will meet at the “round” table.

Summarizing the outcomes and closing ceremony of XI International Book Exhibition and fair and scientific conference “Book, the way to cooperation and progress” will be held on September 23.
