Turkmenistan is a leader in integrating the Sustainable Development Goals with the national conditions

A round-table meeting dedicated to the implementation of the third stage of the Action plan on integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) with the national conditions of Turkmenistan took place in the conference hall of the economic block complex.

The meeting was organized by the State Committee for Statistics jointly with the United Nations Development Programme.

The international expert on the SDG monitoring system took part in the meeting. The expert arrived in Turkmenistan to hold consultations with the Government of our country and the UN country group on the implementation of the third stage of the process on the SDG integration with the national conditions of the Turkmen state. In particular, In particular, it includes the development of the system to monitor and evaluate the progress of the SDG implementation, the national targets and indicators, including those ones that will be integrated into the Programme of the President of Turkmenistan on the social and economic development of the country for 2017-2021.

On September 25, 2015 in New York, 193 UN member states unanimously adopted a new sustainable development agenda for the period after 2015. 17 Sustainable Development Goals refer to the most important economic, social, environmental and management problems of the modern time. The outcome document adopted at the summit underlines “This agenda is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity”.

The agenda officially entered into force on 1 January, 2016 and it will be valid until 2030 with respect to all countries. The main goal of the agenda is to achieve a just and equitable world, coordinate joint actions to ensure the sustainable economic growth, social development and environmental protection.

Those speaking during the meeting noted that the integrated approach to group actions was at all levels to ensure the implementation of the agenda in accordance with existing obligations of states under the international law it requires an.

Addressing the meeting participants, the Resident Representative for UNDP in Turkmenistan Ms. Jacinta Barrins noted that Turkmenistan was the world leader in terms of sustainable development adaptation to national conditions successfully implementing the relevant measures.

The third stage includes the development of a measurement system to assess the progress in SDG implementing in the relevant ministries and departments, including the State Committee for Statistics.

The meeting participants, including the representatives of various ministries and departments involved in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, together with international experts discussed the most appropriate methods and mechanisms for evaluating the measurement process on SDG implementation in Turkmenistan. The outcomes of the ongoing work on the audit of the existing statistical indicators and their adaptation to the Sustainable Development Goals carried out by the State Committee on Statistics were discussed during the meeting.
