Turkmen boxers won two quota places in the 2012 Olympic Games

Turkmen boxers Serdar Hudayberdiev and Nursahat Pazzyev won two quota places in the 2012 Olympic Games in London at the 2012 Asian Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

S. Hudayberdiev competes in the under 64-kg weight category. 18 boxers competed for four quota places in the 2012 Olympic Games. 16 sportsmen competed for four quota places in the 2012 Olympic Games in the under 75-kg weight category. N. Pazzyev represented our country in this weight category.

In the first round, S. Hudayberdiev decisively defeated 21-6 his rival from Pakistan, and then in the quarterfinal he defeated a Kyrgyz boxer wining at least the bronze medal.

N. Pazzyev, who won the second quota place for the 2012 Olympic Games, defeated 18-7 a representatives of the Iranian team, and then in the quarterfinal defeated an Iraqi boxer. The semifinals will take place on April 11.

In 2009, participant of the fire relay race of the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou S. Hudayberdiev won the gold medal of the Asia Championship in Juhae (China), and for the first time in the history of the national sport ranked the 8th among the top boxers of the world in under 60-kg weight category at the World Championship in Milan, Italy. N. Pazzyev won the bronze medal of the First World Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore in 2010. This year the two sportsmen will make their debut at the Olympic Games.

The two quota places won by our boxers have increased the number of Turkmen sportsmen, who will represent our country at the 2012 Olympic Games, up to nine athletes. Turkmen sportsmen will compete in the boxing, weightlifting, women’s judo, athletics and men’s swimming events at the Olympic Games in London. The final membership of the national team of Turkmenistan that will represent our country in London this year will be known upon completion of the qualification tournaments.
