A regular meeting of the Inter-state Commission for Water Management (ICWM) that brought together the heads and specialists of sectoral ministries and departments in Central Asia as well as the representatives of the Executive Commission of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea took place in Ashgabat.
Water-industry specialists of the neighbouring states held the first session within the framework of Turkmenistan’s chairmanship over the ICWM (2017-2019).
The ICWM goals include the identification of the unified water-industry policy given the interests of all states in the region and the generally-recognized norms of the international law, including water conservation and protection, increase of the quality and the accuracy of water resources assessment, computerization of water allocation systems and development of the programmes on increasing the available water supply to rivers and the measures on their implementation.
The meeting participants expressed satisfaction with the level of the productive dialogue between the friendly neighbouring states – members of the Inter-state Commission for Water Management in the search for the agreed approaches to achieve the efficient use of water resources.
In particular, the meeting participants reviewed the outcomes of the 2016 vegetational seasons as well as the limits of water supply inlets and predicted schedule of work of reservoir cascades of the Amudarya and Sydarya river basins for 2017.
The preparatory work for the 2016 events on occasion of the 25th anniversary of the commission on transboundary water resources management was considered during the meeting.
Considering the agenda of the next session, those taken part in the meeting called for widening cooperation in this sphere.
