The National Championship of Turkmenistan in Anglo-American Checkers started in Balkanabat. This tournament timed to the Victory Day is organized by the State Committee for Tourism and Sports of Turkmenistan and the National Checkers Center of Turkmenistan with the aim to select talented checker-players for the national team and promote this game in the country.
The master’s standard among men is 34 points of 44 points. Such a high standard is caused by the strong membership of competitors, including two international grand masters, international master, master of sports, candidate to master of sports, and seven holders of the first grade.
Twelve sportswomen competed for the title of the Champion with the standard of 25 points of 44 ones.
The Championship is held in a round robin. Rivals play two games in each round.
The students of Balkanabat School for Checkers, brothers - Bahtiyar Durdiev and Byashim Durdiev, and all-round World Champion in Anglo-American checkers among women A. Berdieva, whose title gives her the right to take part in both tournaments, demonstrate the best results among men. She also leads in the women’s events (eight points). A. Garaeva (Balkan) with seven points is on the second place. M. Hadjieva (Ashgabat), R. Hatamova (Lebap) and A. Hadjieva (Balkan) gained six points each.
The Championship will finish on May 18. The best checker-players will form the national team to represent Turkmenistan at the 2012 World Mind Games in Lille (France) in July that are held once in four years.
