The Treaty of Rome signed by Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg in 1957 to create a single market for goods, labour, services, and capital across the EEC's member states.
The festivities to mark the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome are held in many countries all around the world. The thematic forum taken place in Turkmenistan under the aegis of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Finance of Turkmenistan brought together the heads of diplomatic missions and representatives of international organisations accredited in our country, the specialists of the EU Communicative Bureau and embassies of the EU states, national and foreign media as well as students and teachers of the Institute of International Relations, the Turkmen State University and International University of Humanitarian Sciences and Development.
The exhibition arranged at the forum showcased the pictures kept in the historical archive of the European Commission. The documentary film about the history of signing the Treaty of Rome was demonstrated at the exhibition.
In his report entitled “Treaty of Rome - 60th Anniversary” presented at the forum, the Ambassador of Italy in Turkmenistan focused on the key aspects of the history and work of the European Union.
The Head of the EU Communicative Bureau dedicated his presentation to the cooperation with the countries in the region. He emphasized that these days the 10th anniversary of the EU Strategy for Central Asia had been celebrated and the important initiatives put forward by our country on the regional and international issues had met the priorities of work of the European Union in Central Asia.
The Minister of Finance of Turkmenistan told about the successful experience of cooperation between our country and the EU. The Head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy presented the report on the European Union and the UN. In his report he underlined that the UN and the EU had common values and goals, in particular – maintenance of peace and security, development of friendly relations, promotion of international cooperation, respect of rights and freedoms of a person.
The Ambassador of Germany focused on the EU youth educational and sports programmes, It was noted that Turkmen students and teachers actively participated in those programmes.
Summing up the meeting, the conference participants noted that Turkmenistan and the EU had tremendous potential for enhancing multi-aspect cooperation.
