Strong bilateral relations were established in such fields as trade, investments, education, sports and other for all these years. Opening of the Embassy of Malaysia to Turkmenistan in December 2011 and Embassy of Turkmenistan to Malaysia gave the dynamic to bilateral collaboration. Today, owing to the efforts and personal attention of the leaders of both countries, interstate relations are consolidated and enter quality new level.
This is indicated by Turkmen – Malaysian high-level meetings. First state visit of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Malaysia was held in December 2011 and the second visit of Turkmen Leader was paid on November 8, 2016 when the Heads of the states signed number of documents aimed at consolidation of cooperation in economy, science, education and sports. The sides also agreed on expansion of cooperation in trade and investment spheres, particular in oil and gas sector. Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak visited Turkmenistan in July 2011 and June 2014. Official representatives of Malaysia and Turkmenistan met for the first bilateral consultation in Ashgabat on November 7, 2012 and for the second in Kuala Lumpur on April 19, 2016. All of these promote the development of strong trustful relations between our countries.
Malaysia seeks for the development of economic relations with Turkmenistan. In 2016, the total volume of trade between the countries increased for 73.1 percent, export for 67.7 percent and import for 50.5 percent. Malaysia exports industrial and house hold electronic equipment, chemical products, electrical appliances, scientific equipment, and imports agricultural products, textile, footwear and garments form Turkmenistan.
The Government of Malaysia highly appreciate the fact that Malaysian state company «PETRONAS Carigali Turkmenistan» was the first of t foreign companies that was given the opportunity to participate in the development of oil and gas sector of Turkmenistan. At present day, PETRONAS has invested around 10 billion US dollars and is planning to render support to Turkmenistan in the development of oil and gas sector in future.
The popularity of Malaysia as one of the main directions for getting high education and professional training is growing. Memorandum of Understanding in educational sphere was signed in Ashgabat during official visit of the Prime Minister of Malaysia to Turkmenistan on June 10, 2014. At present moment, around 300 students from Turkmenistan study in Malaysian universities. PETRONAS offers annually 10 to 15 grants for Turkmen students to continue study in PETRONAS Technology University on bachelor degree level.
Training courses on technical cooperation programme organized by the Government of Malaysia, under which Turkmenistan specialists have already been trained in such directions as diplomacy, planning and development, privatization, food industry, banking, support of foreign investments and management in oil and gas sphere, were important contribution to training of Turkmen specialists.
Relations in sports between our countries are also consolidated and developed. Malaysian confirmed its participation in V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and awaits impatiently for the beginning.
The Government of Malaysia is willing to continue developing bilateral relations based on beneficial cooperation.
