Delegation of the combined team of the National Center for Special Olympics of Turkmenistan (NCSOT) first took part in the World Athletics Championship for persons with Down's syndrome and gained good results. Babajan Rozbayev became the owner of two gold medals and Gulshen Ibragimova won the bonze medal. Both of special Olympic competitors are from the administrative centre of the Lebap province.

Let us explain that the organizer of the current championship is the International Athletics Association for persons with Down's syndrome (IAADS), which was founded several years ago. It includes the special sport organizations of three continents – North America, Eurasia and Africa. This year, the International Association also included Turkmenistan, which carries out a large scope of work on rehabilitation of people with Down's syndrome owing to physical culture and sports.

The contests taken place in the Portuguese city Angra do Heroísmo hosted over 1000 participants from 13 countries. The participants, who passed special selection, which include obligatory fulfillment of sport qualifying requirements plus special medical examination, including chromosomal conclusion decision and dope test, are allowed participating in these contests. In contrast to conditions and requirements of the contests, being held on the program of Special Olympics, the championships under the aegis of IAADS are regarded as higher sport level.

Besides gained two gold medals, the school-leaver of the Turkmenabat secondary boarding school Babajan Rozbayev was also able to establish new world records in his superior heats for 800 and 1500 meters. In the first discipline, a new standard is 2 minutes 50, 90 seconds and in the second – 5.57, 75 minutes.

By the way, already 10 years, Babajan represents our country in the largest international tournaments on the program of Special Olympics. He was a member of the Turkmen national team in the Central Asian Games – 2002, Worldwide Games-2003 in Ireland, Games of Europe-Asia-2010 in Poland and Worldwide Games-2011 in Greece and always ranked among prize winners. Gulshen Ibragimova won the bronze medal in 800 meter-heat.

Besides medalists, Batyr Ovlyakuliyev, Oybek Jaloletdinov, Ilmir Guseynov and Mekan Ashirov, who competed in putting the shot, long jump and triathlon, were included in our combined team. Each of them demonstrated good results, being in the top six.

Turkmenistan’s State Committee for tourism and sports as well as a series of sponsors – “Ak Toprak”, “Dragon Oil”, “Renaissance Turkmen” and “Advis” companies rendered great assistance to the journey of combined team to the World Championship in Portugal. The next such World Championship will be held in 2014 in the Republic of South Africa.
