The final round of contest entitled “Your flower – the most beautiful” was held in the National Turkmen Carpet Museum. This contest was devoted to the ancient kind of national decorative and applied art – making of felt mats. Winners of the regional rounds from all over the country took part in the contest organized by “Turkmenhaly” State Association and Women’s Union of Turkmenistan.
Hall of the National Turkmen Carpet Museum reminded on this day the festively decorated yurta, where the best needlewomen have gathered. Carpets, felt mats were laid everywhere. There were a lot of many-colored wools. Mistresses from Ashgabat were awarded with grand prize. Jury awarded the first place to needlewomen of Akhal province, second place – to Balkan province and third place – to Lebap province.
According to the conditions of the contest, the mistresses from each province and Ashgabat first presented the video reel, which demonstrated the technique of making the felt mat, rites accompanied this process. In the second stage, the women have to put one of ancient patters “Ak tuynik”, “Gyzyl tuynik”, “Gozenek”, “Saylan”, “Gulyaydy”, “Sekiz gochak”, “Gelin barmak”, “Gapyrga”, “Barmak” and others within 20-25 minutes. The third stage gave the mistresses an opportunity to demonstrate their new patterns, tell about history of pattern, and sing a song hummed by women during their work at embroidery, felt mat or carpet.
Conditions of the contest were urged to open the felt mat making as original folk art. Felt mat was traditionally used for covering the yurta that saved from cold in winter and heat – in summer. Among ornaments on Turkmen felt mat it is particularly depicted the solar signs as the amulets from bad, sheep horns – symbol of welfare, bliss, vital energy, and fringe – the embodiment of endlessness of space and time.
The contest demonstrated it with evidence. Participants from Balkan province presented at the contest the felt mat with new pattern “Berkarar dovletli”. They reflected all natural resources of this seaside region of our country as well as its main symbol – National Tourist Zone “Avaza”. Competitors from Ashgabat also used on the felt mat a new pattern “Oguz yildyz”, symbolizing the modernity, marked with revival of national traditions.
