Exhibition entitled “Science in artifacts of former periods” is held in Mary province museum of history and local lore. Mainly, this exposition presents the archeological findings from Margush as well as collection of articles from “Soltangala” fortress of Ancient Merv. Artifacts were added with concomitant information in the form of schemes, drawings and photos.


Among unique exhibits are bronze segment of wheel crown of cart of the end of third and beginning of the second century B.C. Cart was discovered in Margush during excavations of royal necropolis in the southeast of Gonurdepe – the complex of burial places with system of passages and graves. On such four-wheeled cart – hearses, the deceased was brought to necropolis on donkey, maybe on horse. It was found several such carts. They are kept in the capital’s museum as well. At that, this type of transport is of local production and has no resemblance with kinds of carts of other ancient civilizations, for example, Mesopotamia.


On the place, where the wheels have been found, it was put their imitations in order that the tourists can see how the royal mausoleum looked after excavations. It is also important in preservation of historical monument and educative aspect. Now, Gonurdepe became the acknowledged tourist site. Many people arrive in Turkmenistan to see among numerous sights the ancient Margush, which is the fifth center of world civilization in the world scientific community. In particular, planning schemes of ancient city, temples of Gonurdepe, ceramic cups, vases of different forms from small to large sizes prove this fact. Vessel in the form of teapot from rough ceramics reminding our modern ones but its spout is unusual. Apparently, it is not intended for everyday life but for magic actions. It is over five thousand years old!


Next showcase presents the productions of ancient jewelers – pendants, earrings, necklaces from color stone, bronze and faience. Cosmetic accessories performed from stone, bronze mirror, low-sized vessels for keeping aromatic oils, ointments. Tiny ceramic figure of goddess Anahita spreads above these entire splendors.

In Margush, it was not practiced to ornament the ceramic articles, but nevertheless, the vessels strike with elegance, variety of forms, technique of manufacture. Other ones in the form of caps and cups were glued together with special solution and their function remain to be mystery. Ancient seals, including double-sided seals from stone, bronze and ceramics, presented at the exhibition are unique. Mary museum keeps the largest collection of such seals from Margush. Epoch of primitive communal system was represented with ceramic crocks, belonging to IX-VI centuries B.C. such diversity of artifacts makes the visitors of museum to study thoroughly the maps of the first agricultural settlements of Turkmenistan. In comparison with presented here maps of countries of Near and Middle East, it is formed clear scheme of mutual supplement, interpenetration of ancient cultures through trade caravan roads.


Organizers of exhibition paid a homage to the archeologist, Professor Viktor Ivanovich Sarianidi, who made a lot for development of archeological science in our country. Separate showcase, which also keeps his personal belongings, was devoted to him.
