People’s Artist of Turkmenistan Annageldi Julgayev – from pleiad of those masters, who played innovatory role in development of national musical culture.

Annageldi comes from famous dynasty of Sary bakhshy. From early childhood, he was absorbed in world of folk music. He constantly was among sounds of dutar and gyjak. Therefore, it was quite natural that the boy was appointed to the Ashgabat musical boarding school, true, in class of violin. Here, he learnt with enthusiasm the elements of music, proving a capable, purposeful pupil. He devoted every free minute to the mastering of playing technique. The time has passed and owing to exceptional diligence of Annageldi, his talent became brighter and brighter.

But the love for national instruments, folk music turned out stronger. As far as school of playing gyjak at the head of Oraz Sariyev was opened at the technical secondary musical school of the capital, Annageldi has become one of its first four pupils. And in 1941, when he was only 12, he had played in newly founded Folk Orchestra at the State Philharmonic Society, where he was entrusted with responsible role of concertmaster of a group of gyjak players. A way of comprehension of the world of Turkmen musical culture was opened for young musician in all richness and variety of its traditions.

Creatively intelligent person is always full of ideas. His distinctive feature is the constant need of perfection. Our hero fully corresponds with this criterion. Annageldi Julgayev is the finest expert of national musical instrument – gyjak. Masterly playing it, having sensitive feeling of melody, he always wondered: why this “Turkmen violin” never sounds separately from orchestra, dutar and bakhshy. Diapason of sounding of gyjak is extremely wide. It is possible to make its strings to cry and laugh, to be sad and glad, and its fine and diverse rhythmic ornament grants the richest possibilities for solo performance. So, gyjak of Annageldi sounded solo.

But, as a rule, all new has to prove the strength and right for existence. Recognition has come later. There were critics, who displayed caution towards innovation of the musician. But, the life has cleared it up. The admirers and connoisseurs of national music have appreciated new role of gyjak. First, the recording of performance of Annageldi Julgayev to the accompaniment of piano was sounded in radio, and then was shown on television. Further, the musician started to participate with solo numbers in the concerts. Composers Nury Halmamedov and Aman Agajikov, who became the authors of many compositions for gyjak of Julgayev, paid attention to virtuosic play of the author and rich sounding of the instrument. Annageldi also composed a music and one of his compositions “Greetings to the youth” is in demand among musicians and orchestras of our country even today.

Annageldi Julgayev went on tour to many world countries, and everywhere his skillful performance of classic and folk music on unusual “violin” excited a storm of applauses and had fantastic success.
