Relying on Accumulated Practical Experience

This year, over 4,000 hectares of farmland will be committed to grain legumes and sesame seeds in Dashoguz velayat. The larger proportion of the area (3, 700 hectares) will be under mung bean cultivation again.  Last year, the local farmers gained valuable practical experience in growing mung beans on a large scale as a catch crop after winter wheat, having produced an abundant crop of 5,500-plus tons of the legume, which needs little water and has potential to improve soil fertility. This year’s mung bean yield is estimated to be no less than 150 kg per hectare.

The local agri-producers are expecting to harvest this autumn at least 375 tons of kidney beans as the short maturity of the legume allows it to be used as a catch crop. Just like mung beans, kidney beans have long been cultivated in the north of Turkmenistan. However, the legume will be grown in larger areas for the second consecutive year only. Unlike mung beans, almost one fifth of which are projected to be grown in S. Turkmenbashi etrap, kidney beans will be distributed evenly in all etraps of Dashoguz velayat.

The northern region of Turkmenistan also plans to produce 350 tons of sesame seeds this year. Given the experience gained last year, the producers have good reasons to be hopeful that they will again produce higher-than-expected yields of this oilseed crop, which has a wide range of applications. More than half of the region’s total sesame crops will be grown in S. Turkmenbashi and Kounyaurgench etraps, making them the biggest producers in the velayat.
