Travel companies around the world are increasingly adhering to the principles of sustainable development. Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI) is active in this regard.

The initiative brings together the entire tourism sector to tackle the root causes of plastic pollution. This, in turn, allows governments, private enterprises and other tourism stakeholders to set an example in the transition to a circular economy.

Recommendations for the tourism sector to take further action to tackle plastic pollution during COVID-19 recovery show how reducing the plastic footprint, increasing supplier engagement, and ensuring transparency in action can make a meaningful contribution to a responsible and sustainable recovery in the tourism sector.

The GTPI, developed under the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Program, requires tourism organizations to make a number of specific commitments by 2025. In particular, eliminate unnecessary plastic packaging and other items, take steps to move from disposable models to reusable ones, and ensure that 100% of plastic packaging can be reused or compostable.
