About “Garagyş” part of winter season

In reviewing the turkmen national calendar, it turns out that our forefathers divided a winter season into four parts. Fall in temperature at the end of the Scorpio period witnesses the coming of winter. Garagyş period lasts from 23 November to 7 December. The rich creative heritage of Turkmen people includes many wise aphorisms related to every natural phenomenon which are left as a heritage for the next generation. «Gyşyň güni kyrk tüýsli, kyrkysy-da gylyksyz» saying has a profound meaning.

By efforts of our Hero-Arkadag in the presented to the people the book «Paýhas çeşmesi», the aphorisms «Agşam nanyny az iý, gyş gamyny ýaz iý», «Gün parlap çyksa-da, gyşyň güni ýaz durmaz...», «Ýagşy gelsem, gazan-gazan süýt,Ýaman gelsem, kellebaşaýak üt» diýenmiş, gyş», «Ýylyň ýyldan, gyşyň gyşdan parhy köp», «Ataş kenary, gyş gününiň lälezary», «Gyş arryk alma, ýaz – ýagyr» ýaly gyş are widely covered.

If in the winter season there is enough depth of precipitation, then the spring season will be blessing. The winter snow, like fertilizer, has a favourable effect on planting. The plants roots nourish with the useful substances in the soil, and plants become resistant to various diseases and sound.

As the forefathers used to say, the more snow lies on the ground, the more use from it. Indeed, snowy weather create some trouble in the pastures, but there will be plentiful growth of grass in future spring. Sometimes, even the new born lambs disappear among grass. That is why snow fall in winter is considered as godsend.

Winter, snow and frost are also mentioned in riddles that reflect the creative potential and talent of our wise fathers.

Riddles about spring and winter “Öýümiziň arkasynda iki ýagly çybyk, birisi ̶ otdan, birisi ̶ buzdan”, about water, freezing water and various frost flowers «Aýaksyz, elsiz – surat çeker», about the snow, land and land fertility «Ak iner çökmese, boz maýa gaýmaz» are also examples of this.
