This week, UNICEF delivered Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) items for onward distribution to medical workers in the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan. PPE with a total value of USD 225,000 includes coveralls, masks, face shields, gowns, gloves and goggles. These items were donated as part of ongoing support to the Government of Turkmenistan in the implementation of the National Plan for Preparedness and Response to Acute Infectious Diseases.

“As the COVID-19 pandemic continues around the world, it is becoming increasingly clear that personal protective equipment is a critical component of ongoing prevention and response. And we are responsible for protecting the health of healthcare workers. ” - said Alexandru Nartea, UNICEF Deputy Representative in Turkmenistan

UNICEF has been supporting Turkmenistan in the supply of essential medical equipment and hygiene items since the outbreak of the pandemic around the world and is committed to continue to provide this support to meet the unprecedented global challenge.

In addition, the same charter flight delivered 4 essential vaccines against hepatitis A, seasonal influenza, typhoid fever and human papilloma virus for routine immunization through a long-standing partnership between the Government of Turkmenistan and UNICEF to deliver essential vaccines for children. This is the third shipment this year and fulfills UNICEF's 2021 vaccine procurement and delivery commitments and will ensure continued vaccination of children in the country.

The procurement of vaccines and supplies related to vaccines is fully funded by the Government of Turkmenistan, and routine vaccinations are provided free of charge to all children in the country. UNICEF provides the Government with procurement and delivery services to Turkmenistan of high quality, affordable WHO prequalified vaccines, safe injection equipment and the cold chain.
