Curling section opened in Ashgabat

The curling department operates on the basis of the Ashgabat Winter Sports Palace. Currently, boys and girls aged 13 to 17 are being recruited into a professional junior group.

Trainings are supported by the Curling Federation of Turkmenistan, which in 2020 received the status of a temporary member of the World Curling Federation (WCF).

From the history of the creation of this sport, it is known that curling appeared in Scotland at the beginning of the 16th century. Confirmation of this fact is a sports equipment (stone) found at the bottom of a dried-up reservoir in the Scottish town of Dunblane. The date of manufacture is engraved on the surface of the historical curling stone - 1511.

In 1924, demonstration curling competitions were held at the Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix. And in February 2006, the International Olympic Committee ruled that the curling competition at the 1924 Games should be considered a full-fledged Olympic competition.

Curling was recognized as an Olympic sport in 1998. At the XVIII Winter Olympic Games, held then in the Japanese city of Nagano, where the first gold medals were played.

For our country, this is a fairly young sport. Recently, the coaching staff successfully completed online courses under the program of the World Curling Academy. Having improved their professional qualifications, the mentors began training Turkmen athletes.

- Developing curling at the junior level in Turkmenistan, in the future we plan to include it in the program of the children's winter sports school along with figure skating, hockey and short track, - says head curling coach Sakina Gulamalyyeva.

Today, Turkmen athletes take an active part in international winter sports competitions and achieve good results.

The other day, the national hockey team of our country successfully performed at Kazan Hockey Cup, which was held in Tatarstan among representatives of Islamic countries. Turkmen hockey players were awarded the Cup and medals for the 3rd place in the group.

So the junior team of future curlers began to replenish with athletes. The children learn the rules of team play, learn to throw sports equipment (curling stones). And also properly handle the brush, which helps to keep the stone on the desired path.

- In 2024, South Korea plans to host the Youth Olympic Games, - continues Sakina Gulamalyeva. - We are very serious about the juniors. Maybe we will be able to represent Turkmenistan at these competitions. In the meantime, we invite everyone to our team.

Anyone can discover an interesting sport or become part of the national team. To do this, you need to contact the Ashgabat Winter Sports Complex.
