Six medals – 2 silver and 4 bronze – were won by Turkmen sambo wrestlers on the first day of the Asian and Oceanian Championships that started in Tashkent.
The large-scale continental competitions brought together more than 600 sportsmen of various ages – from cadets to masters (veterans) – from 23 countries, who will compete for sets of medals in sport and combat sambo among men and women, as well as in sambo among blind men in the SVI-1 (totally blind) and SVI-2 (visually impaired) classes.
Muhammetmyrat Babekov (weight category up to 58 kg, 6 participants) in sport sambo and Bezirgen Begenjov (up to 98 kg, 5 participants) in combat sambo were awarded silver medals in the Turkmenistan team.
On the way to this success, M. Babekov won two victories, winning in the quarterfinals over Munhbat Genendaram (Mongolia) - 2:1 and in the semifinals over Kimal Obolbekov (Kyrgyzstan) - 2:1. In the final, Muhammetmyrat lost to Ilhom Parmonov (Uzbekistan) - 3:5 and rose to the second step of the podium. And B. Begenjov in the first match, which became the semifinal, won against Bekbolsun Kerimbekov (Kyrgyzstan) - 8:0, and in the final lost to Raihan Madi (Kazakhstan) - 1:4.
Four bronze medals in our team were awarded to representatives of sport sambo Sapar Dovletov (up to 64 kg, 8 participants) in the men's tournament and Aziza Nazarova (up to 50 kg, 5 participants), Zuleyha Hudayberdiyeva (up to 54 kg, 5 participants), Merjen Jorayeva (up to 59 kg, 4 participants) in the women's tournament.
Sapar Dovletov won against Mohammed Albaker Algarrawi in the first round - 10:0, then in the semi-finals he lost to Jandos Beysenbayev (Kazakhstan), who became the champion of Asia and Oceania - 0:6, and in the fight for bronze he won against Lee Seunggan (Republic of Korea) - 2:0. And Nazarova, Hudayberdiyeva and Jorayeva lost to their opponents in the first fights at the semi-final stage and rose to the third step of the podium.
