The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkmenistan, in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), conducted a practical seminar in the Dashoguz velayat.
The seminar was organized within the framework of the project titled “Conservation and Sustainable Management of Land Resources and High Nature Value Ecosystems in the Aral Sea Basin for Multiple Benefits.” The purpose of the project is to develop integrated plans for the use of land and water resources based on hydromodule zoning and irrigation regimes.
Staff from relevant ministries and agencies, along with representatives of civil society, discussed economically efficient models for the reclamation of saline soils using salt-tolerant crops. They also reviewed modern irrigation techniques, such as geomembrane canal linings. The participants additionally examined the possibilities of applying the principles of integrated water resources management to ensure long-term sustainability.
