Representatives of Turkmenistan won 21 medals – 7 gold, 5 silver, and 9 bronze – at the recently concluded World Fudokan Karate Championship held in the Polish city of Pulawy. About 3,000 athletes of various ages from 47 countries around the world participated, competing in several program categories.
The following members of our team reached the highest step of the podium: Nurgeldi Annagurbanov, Hemra Begjanov, Maksatgeldi Geldiyev, Selim Myratdurdyev, Eziz Zekeryaev, Cherkez Myratdurdyev, and Ibragim Shagulyev.
Silver medals were won by Maksatgeldi Geldiyev, Kemal Ataev, Meylis Charyev, Bazarbay Odaev, and Yhlas Annagurbanov. Bronze medals were earned by Serdar Bayryev, Islam Ulugbekov, Hemra Begjanov, Eziz Zekeryaev, Kemal Ataev, Silap Toylymyradov, Meylis Charyev, and Bazarbay Odaev. Notably, the latter received two bronze medals.
Fudokan is a style of traditional karate created in 1980 by Yugoslav martial arts master Ilija Jorga. Worldwide, between 2 and 15 million people practice Fudokan. The sport is governed by the International Fudokan Federation, which is the second largest organization after the Olympic karate WKF.
