A roundtable involving the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) continued the agenda of the pre-conference day of the upcoming International Scientific and Practical Conference TESC 2025, which is preparing to open in Ashgabat.
The main topic of discussion was increasing hydrocarbon production at mature fields using artificial intelligence (AI).

At the event, leading experts presented advanced approaches to optimizing oil and gas production through the use of AI. Alexey Borisenko, SPE Russia and Caspian Regional Director, shared prospects for the application of artificial intelligence in the oil and gas sector in the region. James Wiltshire, Senior Consultant at GaffneyCline Energy Advisory, provided his expert assessment of using AI to enhance production efficiency.
Particular interest was raised by the report of senior petrophysicist Amirul Afiq bin Yaakob from Petronas Carigali (Turkmenistan) Sdn. Bhd., who spoke about the successful experience of applying their company’s proprietary development — the artificial intelligence tool “ERM AI.” This tool, in development since 2021, has already proven its effectiveness and holds great potential for further advancement.

Representatives of the Natural Gas Research Institute of the State Concern “Türkmengaz” also made a significant contribution to the discussion. Senior researchers Tavus Saryeva and Nabat Mukhammedova, along with laboratory head Aijemal Ezizova, presented reports dedicated to greenhouse gases and climate change, methods for measuring and monitoring methane emissions, as well as the impact of anthropogenic factors on the ecology of natural gas resources in the Central Garagum gas-bearing region.
Tatiana Kirpa, Chief Geologist of the “Türkmengazgeofizika” Directorate of the State Concern “Türkmengaz,” delivered a presentation on intelligent analysis of logging data to assess the integrity of casing and cement sheath in mature fields.
The outcomes of the speakers’ presentations were summarized by Ilya Luryev, a student at the International Oil and Gas University named after Yagshygeldi Kakayev and Chairman of the Ashgabat Student Chapter of SPE.
The dialogue between international experts and local specialists vividly demonstrated Turkmenistan’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development.
