Environmental initiatives: Ashgabat fully supported new steps to preserve the unique Caspian sea

At the Caspian Environmental Summit held in the «Avaza» National tourist zone, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov presented proposals aimed at effectively addressing environmental problems of the Caspian sea and preserving its ecosystem.

The head of state reminded that the idea of holding this summit was first put forward by Turkmenistan at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly as part of the Caspian environmental initiative, and expressed gratitude to all Caspian states for their support and active joint work.

One of the central issues of the speech was counteracting the processes of sea shallowing. The President of Turkmenistan supported the initiative to create a special commission to address the shallowing of the unique reservoir.

«We support the idea of creating a Commission on the Shallowing of the Caspian sea at the level of deputy heads of government. We believe that the Commission is called upon, based on objective scientific data, to develop and propose agreed measures to counteract the negative processes associated with shallowing. We propose to give instructions to complete this task within a short time frame. It is also proposed to create specialised working groups within the Commission to enhance its effectiveness, with the participation of scientists, experts, specialists, and representatives of government agencies from our countries», – the head of state said.

In this context, the President of Turkmenistan proposed holding the first meeting of the Commission in Azerbaijan in the first half of 2027.

At the same time, the head of state expressed support for the initiative to develop an Interstate Program for the Conservation of Water Resources of the Caspian sea, pointing out that it is fully consistent with fundamental position of Turkmenistan on the careful treatment and rational use of biological resources of the region.

In conclusion, the President of Turkmenistan emphasizyed that the main resource for cooperation remains the unity of the Caspian states, based on centuries-old traditions of good neighborliness and a special «Caspian» spirit, which guarantee the preservation of the sea as a space of peace, harmony, and prosperity.
