Koytendag – treasury of natural heritage of Turkmenistan

Having been in the center of attention of the scientists from many world countries, who in spring of the current year have taken part in the International expedition devoted to the study of Koytendag, this unique natural part excited new surge of interest, having opened its little known sides as well.

The analysis conducted by specialists allowed appreciating Koytendag as one of the reference parts of the Turkmen nature almost untouched by activity of human being and providing a vast field for research activity of scholars as well as for the development here of ecological tourism and recreational zone.

According to data fixed by botanists, there are no less than 1000 species of plants with high rate of endemism, indicating relict nature of the flora developing here during millions of years.

The fauna of Koytendag is rich as well. Here, it is possible to find 25 kinds of reptiles, 136 – birds and 44- mammals. Among quite rare animals, it is worth mentioning black stork, paradise flycatcher, saker falcon, brown bear, Turkestan lynx, markhor and Koytendag loach (cavefish).

Most of natural sights of the land are particularly valuable in ecological, scientific, geological, historical-informative and aesthetic respect. Some of them, for example, karstic caves and the “plateau of dinosaurs” have the state status of the natural monument. Research of the scientists allowed revealing and recommending for aforementioned list another 28 natural objects of Koytendag such as the Umbardere canyon with the waterfall, the Daraydere canyon, the karstic Garlyk caves, the “Kyrk gyz” grotto, the karstic lake Kattakol, the hydrosulfuric spring Gaynarbaba, the sacred Unabi grove and other landscape, geological-and-geomorphological, hydrologic, botanical and zoological natural objects.
