An annual action to burn narcotic drugs seized by the Turkmen law enforcement agencies during the counter-drug operations took place in Kasamly Julge locality near Ashgabat. The heads of the law enforcement agencies, public organisations, diplomatic missions and representations accredited to Turkmenistan and journalists took part in the counter-drug action organized by the Government and the State Anti-Drug Coordination Commission under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan.

Over 193 kilograms of narcotic drugs were burnt during the action. This is much less than were burnt during previous actions in Kasamly Julge locality that vividly testifies the success achieved in the struggle against illicit drug trafficking and the efficiency of measures taken by the Turkmen state and law enforcement agencies.

Narcotic drugs seized during the counter-drug operations were demonstrated to action participants who could throw narcotic drugs packed in sacks and packages into the special furnaces. The counter-drug action was held in accordance with the established procedure and monitored by law enforcement officers and experts.

The participants defined counteraction to illicit traffic in narcotic drug as a priority aspect of the domestic and foreign policy pursued by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, where cooperation with international organisations, including an old partner – the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNDOC) plays a significant role. Turkmenistan actively cooperates with the world structures exchanging information on illicit drug and psychotropic substances trafficking.

Turkmenistan as a signatory to the three UN conventions to combat illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances of 1961, 1971 and 1988 actively and effectively collaborates with the United Nations on a wide spectrum of issues in this field. In this context the membership of Turkmenistan in the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs for the period of 2012-2015 is of particular importance.

Turkmenistan takes an active role in addressing this urgent global problem and sets a good example to follow for many countries of the world. In order to ensure more efficient implementation of the state policy aimed at preventing illicit drugs trafficking, the State Service on Drugs of Turkmenistan was established on the initiative of the Turkmen leader. This year it was reorganized into the State Service on Security of Healthy Society.

The effective measures are taken in the country to combat illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and detect and prevent drug addiction under the National Programme for 2011-2015 to counter illicit drug trafficking and provide assistance to persons addicted to drugs and psychotropic substances.
