A regular meeting of the Commission on monitoring the implementation of Turkmenistan's international human rights commitments and international humanitarian law took place at the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan. The representatives of the Mejlis, a number of ministries and departments as well as public organizations of Turkmenistan attended the meeting. The meeting agenda focused on the work done within the last year and the prospect plans for the future.
As a full member of the United Nations Organization that has ratified the main international conventions, including in the sphere of human rights, the Government of Turkmenistan takes consistent steps to implement the regulations of these important documents. One of the core working areas of the Commission is to monitor the national legislation and draft relevant recommendations.
The 2013 work plan focuses on the further development of relations with international structures, first of all the UN and its agencies, organization of seminars, meetings and consultations with participation of international experts with the aim to draft national reports and reviews as well as to study the advanced experience in the sphere of human rights protection and stimulate information activity in this sphere.
Within the framework of the meeting, the Working Group participants reported on the progress in implementing the generally recognized norms of the international humanitarian law in the national legislation.
The Commission members were informed on the progress in implementing the General Programme of Turkmenistan on development of the legal system for juveniles. The other important issues were considered during the meeting.
