Meeting of the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda

The Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan held a meeting that brought together members of the Central Commission, members of working groups established at the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda, national observers and journalists. The meeting agenda focused on the preparations for elections of Halk Maslakhaty and Gengeshi members to replace the members who have resigned.

During the meeting, the heads of Velayat and Ashgabat election commissions reported on the preparations for the forthcoming social and political action. It was noted that 69 members will be elected to Gengeshi and 59 members will be elected to velayat, etrap and municipal halk maslakhaty. In this regard, 128 constituencies were established for election of Gengeshi members in the etrap cities, settlements, gengeshliks and members of halk maslakhaty.

278 polling stations were opened and polling site commissions were established in etraps, settlements and gengeshliks. The commission members include the specialists of various branches of the national economy, the sphere of education and healthcare, science and culture nominated by public organisations and associations as well as group of citizens. The voters’ lists are defined. The polling stations will be supplied with required material and technical facilities.

According to the national legislation and the Resolution of the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan, the nomination of candidates to the Halk Maslakhaty and Gengeshi members to replace the members who have resigned has started on February 28, 2013. The canvassing campaign will start upon completion of registration in district electoral committees in velayats.
