Introduction into medical practice of most leading technologies and treatment methods, decrease of population’s sickness rate, increase of life expectancy of the residents of Turkmenistan – all these are the evidence of successfulness of the state policy in the sphere of public health. Among criteria of estimation of effectiveness of the policy is the international certification of the country as the territory free of some kind of diseases. These are the guarantees of the authoritative international organizations, which determine the efficiency of prophylactic works of the national services.
Turkmenistan is the owner of several important international certificates. First of all, in June 2002, Turkmenistan became the owner of the international certificate as the country, which eliminated the wild poliomyelitis virus circulation. Then, together with whole European region of WHO, Turkmenistan received the international certificate “Territory free of dracunculus” although the disease was eradicates many years before.
In November 2004, on behalf of the UNICEF, World Health Organization and International Council for control of iodine deficiency disorders, Turkmenistan was awarded with the International Certificate on attainment of universal salt iodination for sustainable liquidation of iodine deficiency disorders. Turkmenistan became the first of states of the CIS and Central Asia and fourth in the world, which got universal recognition as the country provided salt iodination in accordance with the generally accepted international standards.
It is worth mentioning that the activity on salt iodination started in our country in 1998. Since, whole salt, being produced in Turkmenistan, is iodized. Today, all population of the country is provided with free iodized salt.
Success of Turkmenistan in flour enrichment was appreciated as well. In 2011, Turkmenistan was honored with the award for the lead in the field of flour fortification, which was presented at the Eurasian Conference and Exhibition of the International Association of the workers of mill sector held in Florence.
Turkmenistan celebrated its regular success in October 2010, when it became the owner of the International certificate, testifying that our country gained full elimination of malaria. In opinion of WHO experts, Turkmenistan is the leading state in solution of this problem. Its experience was recommended for use by other countries.
Such work is also realized on other trends of the National Program “Immunoprophylaxis”. So, in 2012, the European Bureau of the World Health Organization informed about confirmation by the international experts of successfulness of the national immunization program, particularly on eradication of measles and rubella.
The Turkmen healthcare system also has other awards. Among them is the international award “European quality” for attainment of the high quality of educational services in accordance with the European standards, which was presented to the State Medical University of Turkmenistan in 2011 on decision of the European Business Assembly.
A year later, the State Medical University was included into “Avicenna” directory of the world database about academic educational medical institutions, which confirmed by the Copenhagen University, World Health Organization and World Federation for Medical Education.
